With all the rain here in AZ lately, I have not had a chance to get out for a well deserved ride. So I thought I would strike up a post that I have long been waiting to discuss: HELMET LAWS.
I'm not going to get all statisical or preach and lecture. What I want from this post is to raise a question of WHY.
It seems that more and more states are coming to the conclusion that a helmet law is a necessary evil that must be mandated and enforced upon our rights as citizens of this great country.
Let me be the first to tell you that I wear a helmet. It is my choice to do so. For my own personal reasons, I came to this decision without government telling me to do so. So I have to wonder, why does government have to be involved in this "choice"?
15 or so years ago, they came in with seatbelt laws. You see the ads today - "Click it or Ticket". Clever huh..?? Again, I wore seatbelts before then and it was a personal "choice". But because of all the statistical information provided by insurance industry and many other organizations, government felt it was their duty to tell us to "Buckle Up - It's The Law".
For years we have seen commercials with don't drink and drive adds. But there is no law against it. There is, however, an invisible gray dotted line to a law that if your over the legal limit, then you have made an infraction against the law. This gray dotted line is measured by a breathalyzer or whatever device they want to use.
What I am getting at is that government leaves the responsibility of how much you drink before you drive in the hands of an adult. Goverment says, you are an adult of 21 or over so you can make this judgement call.
So the question is simple. Why will government not allow adults to make this same decision to wear a helmet or not?
That's my take - what's yours?
