Cave Creek, AZ Ride - 9/20/08

On Saturday, the Mrs and I took off for Cave Creek, AZ. This is located on the northeast side of Phoenix, a short ride from Peoria. The goal was to visit the town and then take off to see Buddy Stubbs Arizona Harley-Davidson.

The ride was not exactly the most exciting in the world, however I was able to let the Harley loose on the 101. Once we arrived to Cave Creek road, we turned left and headed for the town. Really nothing eventful after you turn onto Cave Creek. It is pretty much a straight shot into town with the speed at a constant 55 down to 45. WATCH YOUR SPEED. The Sherrif's station is located close to town.

There were plenty of restaurants in Cave Creek to choose from along with several merchant stores. We chose to eat at "Harolds". The menu had plenty to choose from ranging in high to low price range. I would say it was very affordable. The restaurant itself had plenty of seating and even a stage for a band. Would I go back, probably so. But again, there were plenty of restaurants in the area to choose from.

After finishing up lunch, we headed back down Cave Creek road to Buddy Stubbs. I have to personally give them 5 revs right off the bat! Their customer service was excellent and the store itself was nicely laid out. I have been to plenty of Harley dealers and I would have to put them right next to my friends at Harley Davidson of Dallas in Allen, TX. Something that is rare at the Buddy Stubbs location is that he has his own museum. We did not have time to visit, however, it is a definte "To Do" next time we are there.

After checking out a few bikes and shopping around we headed back home. Total mileage for the day was 83.3 miles. For the ride itself, I would give it 3 revs.

The Biker Wave

Hello fellow riders and readers!

This post has nothing to do with any adventures today. But I wanted to get your thoughts on the "Biker Wave" as many of us call it.

Since moving here to Peoria, AZ, bikers are everywhere on all types of bikes. Obviously with the weather and terrain, Arizona is an awsome place to pick up and ride for both day and overnight trips! Regardless if your riding a Harley, Honda, Kawasaki or scooter, we have gotten the "Wave".

Generally speaking, the wave is the recognition of the brotherhood we all share in riding a bike. That being said, have you ever delivered the wave and nothing was given in return?

I try not to give it to much focus because I give the benefit of the doubt in most cases. Maybe they didn't see me or were in the middle of a manuver OR maybe the passenger was babbling in their ear. But there are those cases where you know dog gone well that nothing was going on and they seen you plain as day! So what gives?

The majority of us bikers acknowledge the pride in the wave and deliver it with no problem. But for those who do not - and none of the scenarios apply above that affect you - COMMON!! Are you royalty in leather and expect us to ooohhh and ahhh your bike if we cross your path again? Don't think so!!

So in wrapping this post up - keep the "Biker Wave" alive and leave royalty to the misfits that have no clue!

Rock Springs Ride - 9/7/08

We had a few short hours to kill so we took off to Rock Springs on the Harley. We heard they had an awesome restaurant called "Rock Springs Cafe". We had to go check it out and see if this was true or not. Results on the cafe were right on!! We grabbed breakfast. The plates were full of food and at a good price.

As for the ride, well, not very eventful. We took two separate routes just for kicks. For the trip there, we used the 101 to 17N then on the ride back took 17 S, 74W to Lake Pleasant Rd.

The ride on 17N from the 101 was filled with construction so the road sucked!! On the ride back, we stopped short of construction by taking 74. The views were OK and shortened the trip by 15 minutes.

As you can see from the pics and the links above.......not much happening!!

Total round trip was 89.9 miles. I give the ride 2.5 Revs..............

If you know of anything about this place that I missed to boost the Revs, let me know! Rubber side down...............B

Totilla Flats Ride - 7/13/08

Our very first trip in AZ on the Harley was to Tortilla Flats! I am proud to list this as the first Harley Adventure due to the true "Adventure" it presented!! Now granted it was not the most scenic ride to get down to Apache Junction. However, once we reached Apache Junction, the era of the past started to take over.

Once you reach SR88 the mountains and desert really come alive!! Superstition Mountain sets on the right hand side when you start down the road. We really did not know what to expect but as we traveled past the mountain I could tell my Harley was waking up and getting excited for the roads coming up.

Sure enough, the Harley was right!! We started to come into the Canyon Lake area, nestled in the mountains and filled with twists and turns. A lot of 2nd and 3rd gear shifting going on and the Harley loving every bit of it!!

Keep in mind we moved from Texas, so this was quite a change. The wife was a little nerved around the cornering going on as the ledges were steep but the views incredible. Several times I could feel her legs squeezing in but it did not take long before the nerves left her and she let the Harley's instinct and skill take over. From that point on you could not help but wonder how the people back in the Old West came across this amazing stretch and actually built a town in the middle of no where!

After about 18 miles, we finally made it to the all to famous "Tortilla Flats"! Keep in mind that this "town" is really not even registered as a town at all. Population is somewhere around 6. Yes, only 6! The town really is made up of The Superstition Saloon, General Store and a few other buildings.

As we rode into the town, I was caught offguard thinking, where is the town??? Is this it??? But I had to keep in mind that this is the West. This was an old stage coach town turned Ghost Town. We stopped into Superstition Saloon to grab a quick bite as we sensed the weather was starting to change.

Superstition Saloon is a great biker stop because the food is incredible. The burgers we had were not your frozen 2 minute drill type. These bad boys came out nice and plump on the bun. I had a side of fries and some Ice Tea. The price was very reasonable. The interior of the Saloon is decorated entirely of 1 dollar bills! No wall paper, paint, nothing! You can leave your bill with your remark. It will get posted to the wall, ceiling or somewhere within the Saloon.

After our fabulous burgers, we went to the General Store. I could not leave without trying some of their Home Made ice-cream! Chocolate of course and it was worth it!! They do have another flavor which, I was not as daring as I usually am. It was called "Prickly Pear". Apparently made out of cactus..?? Sorry, I had a long trip back to still ride and didn't need any surprises......ha ha

After a great scoop of ice cream and few photos, we were on our way back! Remember earlier, I mentioned the weather was starting to change? Well, it did during our lunch. In AZ, they have "Monsoon" Season. Look it up to get the full scoop on what that really means. In short, it means that bright and sunny weather can change really quick to torential rains and storms. I thought you were lucky to even see a cloud in AZ...???!!! Sadly mistaken!!

After our last pic, the clouds were changing fast and the wife said enough is enough, time to get out of here. Another thing to keep in mind, no hotels in Tortilla Flats!!! So we took off for back home. Even though we were racing against the storm, how fast can you truly go with all the twists and turns. Common sense first, take your time and stay alive!! Don't ride off the cliff!!

We finally got out off the mountains and back to SR88 - destination home. But wait, that would be to easy. As we left SR88 and got to Highway 60, the Monsoon finally caught up with us. We were not prepared! No rain gear!! Hey we're in AZ now, what is rain?? DUH - my advise - when in Monsoon season, watch the freakin weather reports!!!!!!

We were greeted with freezing cold, nail piercing rain drops! Many of you have experienced this so you know what it's like!! After about an hour of ducking out at a local Circle K gas station (drinking plenty of coffee to warm up) we started to play cat and mouse with the clouds all the way home.

Needless to say, we made it after a total of 5 1/2 hours bike time and nearly 150 miles for the day round trip. Every minute, mile and rain drop worth it. What's life without a little adventure to the ride!!

REV SCALE RANKING - A DEFINITE 5!!!
