Miserable Work Ride 12/22/2008

AHHHH - the refreshing scent of a nice rainfall.

BUT NOT THROUGH MY HELMET!!!!!!!

Yes, once again our fine weather forecasters projected it WRONG... I was anxiously anticipating the forecast for today. Eager to just take the Harley on a ride into work. My wish came true.

Viewing three different forecasts by the local media and all three confirming that rain was to be expected in the evening.

It's a GO I said - cloudy but no rain. I even went into work an hour early given the past history of these so called professionals. The ride in was perfect. Brisk morning desert air rushing against me! By 1:30 in the afternoon, sprinkle - sprinkle. By 2:00 pm, sprinkles turned into showers. By 4:00, showers turned into an on & off switch of the clouds faucet. By the time I left, someone left the faucet on!!!

Yes, I was drinched from waist to toe. By the time I made my last turn to the house, I could literally feel the water in my boot swaying up and down as I changed gears!

I live in Phoenix, AZ for crying out loud. 95% of the time the forecast calls for sun. The most they really have to do is either make that all crucial call of "Partly Cloudy" or "Partly Sunny"! OOOHHHH Difficult! So the one time they really get a chance to call something out of the ordinary, like "RAIN",,, they botch it up!!!

Being from Ohio, I always said, what is the one job that you can always be wrong and still get paid? Answer: a weatherman. That same Q/A did not change in Texas either. And now, well, Phoenix has officially joined the ranks.

Now I must go and make sure all the water is dumped out of my boots and wash the bike down.

Total Revs for this ride = Are you kidding me?

To Helmet or Not To Helmet

With all the rain here in AZ lately, I have not had a chance to get out for a well deserved ride. So I thought I would strike up a post that I have long been waiting to discuss: HELMET LAWS.

I'm not going to get all statisical or preach and lecture. What I want from this post is to raise a question of WHY.

It seems that more and more states are coming to the conclusion that a helmet law is a necessary evil that must be mandated and enforced upon our rights as citizens of this great country.

Let me be the first to tell you that I wear a helmet. It is my choice to do so. For my own personal reasons, I came to this decision without government telling me to do so. So I have to wonder, why does government have to be involved in this "choice"?

15 or so years ago, they came in with seatbelt laws. You see the ads today - "Click it or Ticket". Clever huh..?? Again, I wore seatbelts before then and it was a personal "choice". But because of all the statistical information provided by insurance industry and many other organizations, government felt it was their duty to tell us to "Buckle Up - It's The Law".

For years we have seen commercials with don't drink and drive adds. But there is no law against it. There is, however, an invisible gray dotted line to a law that if your over the legal limit, then you have made an infraction against the law. This gray dotted line is measured by a breathalyzer or whatever device they want to use.

What I am getting at is that government leaves the responsibility of how much you drink before you drive in the hands of an adult. Goverment says, you are an adult of 21 or over so you can make this judgement call.

So the question is simple. Why will government not allow adults to make this same decision to wear a helmet or not?

That's my take - what's yours?

Birthday Ride 12/07/2008

Well I cured the "ITCH" by getting out on my B-Day - FINALLY!!!
No particular destination. But like I always say, it's not the destination as it is the journey. A short one, but who cares.
I decided that I wanted to look at trees. NO - not Christmas trees. PALM Trees.. As we pulled into the local tree / landscape business, I wasn't quite sure what they were thinking. I think somewhere along the lines of "Are these bikers lost or what"... OR "What exactly do they think we grow here?...
Anyway, we're in the market for some future lawn remodeling and decided to get educated on the different Palm Trees. It was quite humorous. Walking around through all these trees and flowers in our gear, looking rough & tough. But once the gentleman who helped us got past the looks and seen the wife's charm, it was all business.. HMMM - Think I wrote a post on something like this before......

Anyway, after our Palm Tree 101 course, it was off to Chili's for a fine B-Day Dinner. No Denny's this go around for those who have been following.

After a nice dinner, we had to of course plow into some desert!!! What else but CHOCOLATE CAKE!

Then it was off homeward bound to tend to the kiddos. No need for routes or anything on this ride. Just a simple scratch of the itch by spending it on the bike with the wifer!!!

Total Revs = 5 of course!! It was my B-DAY!!

The ITCH

It's been a while since I have posted a ride and I can't tell you how bad I have the "ITCH"!!!!

The "ITCH" is the need to ride! Those up north know what this is all about all to well. For those "non-bikers" you can compare it to whatever is your feel good addiction (food, alcohol, etc, etc.).

Needless to say, all the activity surrounding the holiday's has put a damper on getting out for a decent ride. The itch has been burning a hole in my skin and I believe at long last a new ride is on the horizon! Destination unknown, but do we ever really care?

There was the temporary fix by taking all the family kiddos for a ride around the block. It was totally cool to see their wide smiles and bright eyes. It brought me to think afterwards - was I like that my first time? Probably so, and I can imagine I'll be like that after this next weekend. I'll be celebrating my B-Day with none other than my Harley on a nice ride!!!

Till then - Rubber Side Down!
