2/19/2009 - Trash Day Ride

Several times I have talked about riding in the morning and taking in fresh desert air. Ahh - how refreshing.

Well today, not so refreshing! I was heading into work and doing the normal change between expressways when something hit my nose senses that didn't quite add up. I had noticed a few pieces of paper debris flying around on this busy interstate and thought that was odd. Then I realized what the cause of the debris and stifling smell derived from. YEP! A huge dumpster truck labeled - WM (Waste Management).

OH THE AGONY!!!! Several questions and thoughts immediately came to mind: It's rush hour, should I try and pass? Can I pass? We are packed in here like sardines because it is rush hour! And why do they call this rush hour, WE ARE NOT moving! How many more freaking miles to my exit? What is causing this STINCH?! I never prepared for a "Throw Up Stategy" like I have an "Exit Strategy".

I had a five car breather in front of me which dwindled quickly down to one. The STINCH worsened! The next set of thoughts: Will this smell stay on me when I get to work? How can I explain that? Do I have tomato juice at home to soak in? Thank GOD I did not eat breakfast!

Finally, my exit came! Typically you de-accelerate when taking an exit. In this case I went from 45 to 65 in no time just to get by. By the time I pulled into work, the STINCH had left from under my visor. As far as I could tell, no one looked at me with horrid expressions. So either they really didn't smell anything or they all met later to discuss how to move me out of the office space.

Mental note: do not leave at that same time due to it being "TRASH DAY"!!!

The joy of riding scoots is enjoying the smells around us that we are typically isolated from in cages. The down side is that we get the less desirable smells as well!

I have been trapped behind the trash truck a few times myself, and I feel your pain. At least there wasn't anything flying out :)

Mr. Bam: I think we have you beat here in the midwest. If you ever ride past a hog lot or a cattle yard in mid summer you will know stink is.
